Birth of The Piña Colada - Invented at a Hilton Hotel

Did you know the refreshingly cool, classic cocktail, Pina Colada, was originally created at a Hilton hotel?

Pina Colada and pineapplesThere’s no denying it - the Pina Colada’s status is one of the top frozen cocktails ever invented! It’s refreshing, tasty, and just about everyone has enjoyed one - with or without the alcohol! The Pina Colada has also played a role in the history of Hilton Hotels, as it was invented at Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The perfect mix of pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum, this special cocktail was created by hotel bartender Ramon Monchito Marrero in 1954. After experimenting with the drink for three months, Marrero settled on the famously icy recipe that the frozen drink’s fans still enjoy today. He served the drink to guests of the Caribe Hilton for 35 years and, in 1978, Puerto Rico officially named the Pina Colada its official Island drink.

What makes the Pina Colada such a special drink is that it’s equally tasty with or without rum. If you’re looking for the perfect destination to celebrate this delicious drink on National Pina Colada Day, visit us here at the Hilton Miami Downtown. Take in the picturesque views of Downtown Miami, and enjoy some time at our 1601 Lobby Lounge and CityVu Pool Bar with a delicious and refreshing Pina Colada. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget!
